Suffolk businesses urged to protect their keys

Suffolk Constabulary and its partner, Keycare, are urging businesses within the county to consider joining the Suffolk SAFEKey Scheme, which is now in its fifth year. The scheme currently has over 7,000 members, of which 10% are businesses.

Suffolk SAFEKey is an innovative scheme that provides protection and assistance to individuals and business owners if they lose their keys anywhere in the UK or EU. Members of Suffolk SAFEKey receive a Suffolk Constabulary branded keyfob with a unique membership number which is added to a secure database, along with emergency contact details in case Police need to access their business property when it is unattended.

The finder of the lost keys gets a £10 reward for calling the 24/7 helpline to get the keys reunited with the owner. In addition, a portion of the money raised from membership fees goes towards the Constabulary’s charitable arm, which supports projects that enhance community safety and quality of life issues for people living and working in Suffolk.

The cost of membership is £12 a year for individuals and £24 a year for businesses.

For businesses, losing or having their keys stolen can lead to considerable inconvenience and concern. Keycare estimates that the average value of keys on a single fob is £500, which includes the cost of calling out a locksmith and having the locks replaced.

Through the Suffolk Constabulary branded key fob, business owners have the reassurance that that they are more likely to be reunited with their lost keys. Since it launched, some £25,000 worth of keys have been returned to Suffolk SAFEKey members. Their membership of the secure database also means that the Police know who to call in the event of an incident at an unattended property.

Suffolk has worked with Keycare, the UK’s leading key recovery specialist, on the scheme since 2012 and it has just renewed Keycare’s contract for another 3 years.

Gareth Wilson, Chief Constable of Suffolk Constabulary comments: “We are the first Police force in the country to offer such a valuable service. Losing keys is a fact of life, but we hope that business owners in particular will recognise the benefits of protecting their keys and their property.”
